Question: Why is democracy the most suitable form of government? Give reasons for your answer.

Answer: Democracy the most suitable form of government as it is the ‘people’s government’. It is most suitable form of government because it represents the needs and aspirations of the people of a country. All people have a right to have a say in how they wish to be governed and who their leader ought to be.

Question: Discuss the role of the Suffragette Movement in ensuring women the right to vote.

Answer:

  1. The word Suffrage means the right to vote in an election. The pioneer of the suffragette Movement was Emmeline Pankhurst. The fight for women’s right to vote began in France in the 1780’s and 1790’s.
  2. As a result women in some countries got the right to vote.
  3. The movement adopted extreme methods to draw the government’s attention. In 1897, the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) was formed in United Kingdom. The Union held public meetings, wrote letters to politicians, published various texts and organized protest marches to demand women’s suffrage.
  4. India granted all people above the age of 18 the right to vote as soon as it became independent in 1947.

Question: Wright a short note on Nelson Mandela.

Answer: For a long time a form of racial discrimination called apartheid was practiced in South Africa by the white minority government. Under this system people were separated on the basis of race and on the basis of the colour of the skin. A policy of racial segregation was followed where in whites and blacks had to live in separate areas. There were separate schools, coaches and markets for each of them. The blacks did not have a say in the government ruled ruthlessly over the blacks who formed 80 percent of the population. The struggle against the policy of apartheid was undertaken by the African National Congress and its leader Nelson Mandela.

Question: What do you understand by the word ‘government’? List five ways in which you think the government effects your daily life.

Answer: The word government refers to a governing body that makes decisions and gets things done for the welfare of its citizens.

  1. The government provides legal supports to its citizens against any discrimination and injustice.
  2. It maintains peace and so keeps society in order.
  3. It controls crime.
  4. It assists people to lead proper life.
  5. In the event of natural calamities, the government provides all emergency assistance to the affected people.
