Answer: Committees such as the Education Committee and the Public Health Committee play an important role in the administration of cities. For Eg: Municipalities and Municipal Corporations Committees take care of day-to-day work.

Question: Write the names of three public conveniences that the municipalities and municipal corporations provide.

Answer:

1. To provide for vegetable markets, food grain markets and other consumer goods.
2. To provide for and maintain public toilets and urinals.
3. To provide fresh and clean drinking water and electricity.

Question: What is a Nagar Panchayat? What does it look after?

Answer:

1. A Nagar Panchayat is set up for an area that is changing from a rural to an urban type.
2. The number of members of the Nagar Panchayat varies between 9 and 20 depending upon the population of the area.
3. It has elected, Nominated and ex-officio members.
4. A Nagar Panchayat has a term of five years.
5. A Nagar Panchayat looks after water supply, drainage, cleaning of streets, street lighting, sanitation, health, primary education, organization and management of fair, bathing ghats and slum improvement.

Question: List the function of the chief Executive Officer in a Municipal Corporation.

Answer:

1. The Municipal Corporation has a Chief Executive Officer known as Municipal Commissioner.
2. The state Government appoints this person.
3. She / He sees that decision mad by the corporation are executed.
4. The Chief Executive Officer also acts as a link between the State Government and the Municipal Corporation.
5. Various officers such as those in charge of departments of health, education, engineering and sanitation help him or her in this work.
6. The Municipal Commissioner co-ordinates their work and has the power to appoint lower level employees.

Question: Discuss the functions of the Municipality and Municipal Corporation.

Answer: 

1. Maintenance of public hygiene: To arrange for the collection and disposal of garbage.
2. Public health: To build hospitals and dispensaries. to arrange for vaccinations to protect people against diseases such as smallpox, cholera and tuberculosis. To prevent adulteration of foodstuff.
3. Registering births and deaths: To maintain records of births and deaths and issue certificates for the same. To provide for and maintain graveyards, cremation grounds and electric crematoriums.
4. Education: To build and maintain schools, public libraries, museums and zoos.
5. Roads and bridge: To build and maintain roads and bridges within the city limits. For Eg: Providing and maintaining fire engines, museums, parks and toilets are all optional functions of municipal bodies.
