Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj was established in the year 1991 by the DPS Society. Initially, it was run in the afternoon shift in DPS Vasant Vihar. The school moved to its present campus in Vasant Kunj in 1994. Mr. Vinay Kumar has been the principal of the school since its inception. DPS Vasant Kunj has a combined strength of 205 teachers at the senior and junior level. The school is considered to be one of the country's top schools, and is highly ranked in various high school rankings.

The youngest ever Principal of a core DPS School, Mr. Vinay Kumar was conferred the Best Upcoming Principal Award in 1996 in recognition of his sterling performance. Mr.Vinay Kumar also received the National Award for Teachers 2002. Mr. Vinay Kumar joined DPS R. K Puram in 1976 as a Biology teacher and soon made a mark as an outstanding teacher, earning the sobriquet, "Maker of Doctors".

He rose to become the Vice-Principal of DPS R.K. Puram in 1992. Always the keen scholar, Mr. Kumar has authored 15 books on Biology and continues to teach and prepare DPS Vasant Kunj students for PMT, with brilliant results.

Delhi Public Schools, with the motto "Service Before Self", have been serving the Society in the field of education for the last 56 years. There are presently as many as 148 schools under its aegis, both in and outside India.

Infrastructure:

The school is divided into four blocks:

  • A Block houses the offices of the Principal and Vice - Principal, the estate and administrative offices and classes XI and XII.

  • B Block houses the office of the Head Mistress and classes II to VI.

  • C Block houses the classes Nursery, Prep and I.

  • D Block houses the classes VII, VIII, IX and X.

Transport:

The school has a fleet of around 29 buses and these in association with private and DTC buses operate on around 55 routes and cover various parts of Delhi.

Library:

The school has three libraries which cater to the needs of students from Class II to Class XII.
The junior school library is for the students from Classes II to V. The middle school library caters to students from Classes VI to XII while the 3rd library is devoted to the specific needs of students of Classes X to XII..

Video and Audio Cassettes are a part of the library which is continuously being replenished with latest books available in India and abroad.

Hostel:

The school hostel was started in July 1999 with seats for 72 students; 36 boys and 36 girls, The hostel caters only to students from classes VI to XII. We at DPS Vasant Kunj endeavor towards providing the best of facilities to our students. The school hostel is a home away from home. Special emphasis is laid on dietary requirements and academic help for the children. Admission to the hostel is subject to the student getting admission in the school Interested candidates can apply in the month of March every year.

Curriculum:

Pre-Primary:

The focus in Prep is on cognitive development and enhancement of the language and interpersonal skills. The children are sensitized to the social and cultural concerns and encouraged to think, reflect on issues and arrive at their own solutions. The main objective behind the curriculum is to enable the children to communicate effectively and to develop the integrated skills and creativity required for them to grow as confident and independent individuals.

Primary (I-VI):

The syllabus becomes more broad based at this level and gradually the young learner is exposed to a wide range of subjects and study material which is suitably graded. Apart from Maths, English and Hindi, subjects like General Science and Social Studies are introduced as is also Computer education.

middle (VII-VIII):

From Class VI to class VIII the curriculum of all the academic subjects as well as a variety of co-curricular activities encourages creativity, aesthetics and adventure. All students study English, Hindi, Mathematics, Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology), Social Studies (History, Civics and Geography) and an optional language (French, German or Sanskrit). Co-curricular activities include Socially Useful & Productive Work (Art, Music, Dance, Electronics, Science Club, Geography Club, Literary Club), Physical and Health Education and Computer Education.

Secondary (IX-X):

Classes IX and X take 5 subjects : English, a second language (Hindi, French, German or Sanskrit), Mathematics, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Social Science (covering History, Civics, Geography and Economics). Co-curricular subjects include Physical and Health Education, Work Experience (Computer Usage) and Art Education. The class X course culminates with the All India Secondary School Examination, which is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education. The Board conducts examinations for the 5 subjects, while the school provides grades for co-curricular subjects.

Senior (XI-XII):

Students of Class XI and XII may take Science, Commerce or Humanities course, each of which cover 5 subjects.

  • The Science Course: English, Physics and Chemistry are the compulsory subjects for the students .

    • The Medical Stream : This has Biology as the fourth subject while the fifth subject can be Maths or Psychology.

    • The Non Medical Stream : This has fourth subject as Mathematics and the fifth subject can be Computer Science or Economics.

  • The Commerce Course: English, Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics are compulsory subjects. For the fifth subject, students have a choice of Mathematics / Psychology.

  • The Humanities Course: English is a compulsory subject. Other choices are :Economics, History / Fashion Design, Political Science / Fine Arts, Maths / Psychology, Physical Education can be opted as the sixth subject in all the streams in class XII only.
    The class XII course culminates in the All India Senior Secondary Examinations, which is also conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

Clubs and councils

Environment Council:

Under the aegis of the D.P.S. Society, the CEEC was formed at D.P.S. Vasant Kunj in the year of its establishment, 1994. The project began with a few members who got together in their efforts to save the environment. Today, the CEEC comprises of more than 100 active members.

Code Warriors:

The school started its computer club, the Code Warriors, in the year 1997. Arun Darlie Koshy was the founder president. At the time of inception, the membership was limited. However, these few members gave excellent competition to other established computer clubs. The Code Warriors later won many events. The real boost came when the Exun 1999 trophy, the most coveted trophy at that time in Delhi, came to DPS Vasant Kunj. The Code Warriors have won more than 950 individual awards, and more than 30 overall trophies in their ten years of existence. The Code Warriors also host an annual computer symposium, the Code Wars.

Quiz Club:

The DPS Vasant Kunj Quiz Club was formally initiated in the year 2004, with the objective of encouraging young talent towards quest for knowledge. Although it is among the 'youngest' clubs in the school, members of the Quiz Club have represented the school in a number of prestigious inter school quiz competitions, and given some tough competition to other major quiz teams.

Debate Society:

The Debate Society of DPS Vasant Kunj was founded in April 2005. It participates in all major debates conducted, and regularly wins awards.

Consumer Care Council:

Founded in the July of 2004, Consumer Care Council primarily aims at spreading consumer awareness rights, duties, responsibilities. The Consumer Care Council hopes to make students responsible and aware citizens.

Exchange Programs:

The school hosts academic and cultural exchange programs with Bukit Panjang Government High School (Singapore), Mauritius College (Mauritius) and Morike Gymnasium Stuttgart (Germany)
