Sainik School Kapurthala is one of 21 Sainik Schools across India. It is situated in the Kapurthala city of Punjab state, based in what was formerly the palace belonging to the Maharajah of princely state of Kapurthala, HRH Maharajah Jagatjit Singh Bahadur. It was started in 1961, with the aim of preparing boys for entry into National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla. Its motto is "Knowledge, Humility and Discipline".
Sainik School is located in the palace of the Maharaja of Kapurthala. The palace was built in 1908 on the pattern of Versailles built by Louis XIV of France. The Jagatjit palace houses Sainik School, Kapurthala (total area measuring 1961 kanals and 18 marlas). The school was inaugurated in July 1961 by the then Defence Minister V.K.Krishna Menon, with the objective of preparing boys to join NDA. It is a fully residential school for boys only, providing public school education.
It has produced more than 700 officers for the Indian armed forces through National Defence Academy. It is the only school among the twenty Sainik Schools which has held the Defence Minister’s trophy continuously for seven years.
Eligibility – The admission is open to boys for Class VI and Class IX only. At the time of admission, the candidate should have passed Class V for entry into Class VI and Class VIII for entry into Class IX.
Age – For Class VI, the candidate should be more than ten (10) years and less than eleven (11) years of age on First of July of the year of admission. For Class IX, the candidate should be more than thirteen (13) years and less than fourteen (14) years of age on First of July of the year of admission.
Reservation – 67% of the seats are reserved for domiciles of Punjab. Short-fall if any, and remaining seats will be thrown open to boys from other States/Union Territories. The distribution of the seats available is as under:-
Entrance Examination – Admission to Class VI and Class IX is granted strictly on the basis of an All India Entrance Examination which is conducted simultaneously at various centres throughout Punjab in the month of January. The tentative centres in Punjab are Kapurthala, Amritsar, Faridkot, Ludhiana and Patiala. The centre opted by the candidate as mentioned in the Call-Up letter will be final and no request for the change shall be entertained.
Co-Curricular Activities - The school caters for harmonious all round development and growth of the students’ personality. The students are encouraged to take part in debates , declamations , quiz competitions, dramatics , lectures etc. The school provides ample opportunities and scope for the growth of creative faculties by offering photography , music , art , painting , electronics and computers as hobbies. The school has a well equipped Brass Band which has participated in the Republic Day parade a number of times.
NCC Training - NCC is compulsory for all students in the school from class VII onwards. The school has the Junior and the Senior Division NCC Wings leading up to Certificate ‘B’ competence. Drill , Annual Training Camps and Rifle firing are taught as a part of NCC training. The cadets also get a chance to participate in para-sailing , ,mountaineering , rock climbing , trekking and adventure camps.
Physical Training - Health and physical education forms an integral part of the training schedule of the school. For imparting Physical Education effectively , the school has qualified Army PT Instructors. Gymnastics , Callisthenics and Yoga are taught systematically and regularly. Special stress is laid on outdoor games , mass PT and athletics.
