Diwali Essay in Easy English

Diwali means Deepawali or a of lights. Two or three days before the festival, people get their houses white-washed and cleaned. They decorate them with pictures and festoons. Shop-keepers decorate their shops artistically. There is a great rush at the sweets, toys and cloth shops. Shop-keepers open new account books on this day.

People send Diwali greetings to their friends and relatives. At night we see rows upon rows of earthen lamps, candles and electric bulbs illuminating the tops of wealth. They think that the goddess visits their houses at mid-night and so they keep the doors open.

There is, however, an evil practice associated with this festival. Some people gamble on that night and ruin themselves. This practice should be stopped.

Diwali is a festival of enjoyment and merry-making. It  is also called the ‘Festival of Light’. The night is turned into day. The markets look like a fairy-land. The festival is so attractive that even non-Hindus participate in it.
