NCERT 9th Class (CBSE) Social Science: Democratic Rights

Question: Mention any two rights which the Constitution of South Africa guarantees to its citizens.

Answer:

  1. Right to privacy, so that citizens or their home cannot be searched,their phones cannot be tapped, their communication cannot be opened.
  2. Right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being.

Question: Mention any two exceptions to the Right to Equality.

Answer:

  1. The State may make any special provision for women and children.
  2. The State may reserve some posts for members of backward class.

Question: Mention any two limitations of freedom of speech and expression.

Answer:

  1. No one can use this freedom to instigate violence against others.
  2. No one can use it to incite people to rebel against government.

Question: Mention the three evils which have been declared illegal under Right Against Exploitation.

Answer:

  1. Traffic in human beings.
  2. Forced labor or beggar in any form.
  3. Child labor.

Question: ‘India is a secular state’. Justify by giving examples.

Answer:

  1. People of India are free to follow any religion.
  2. India doesn’t have any official religion.
  3. Every religious group or sect is free to manage its religious affairs.

Question: Write any four features of the Right to Equality as a Fundamental Right.

Answer:

  1. According to this law, the government shall not deny to any person in India equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws.
  2. The government shall not discriminate against any citizen on the grounds of religion, caste, ethnicity, sex or place of birth.
  3. All citizens shall have equality of opportunity in matters relating to any position in the government.
  4. The principle of non-discrimination extends to social life as well.

Question: What are rights? Why do we need rights in a democracy?

Answer: Rights are reasonable claims of persons over other fellow beings over the society, and over the government recognized by society and sanctioned by law.

  1. Fundamental Rights provide the conditions which are essential for the development of the inherent qualities in man and to secure his all round growth.
  2. These are necessary to preserve human dignity and promote social progress in an atmosphere of freedom.
  3. These provide civil liberties, without which democracy cannot be even conceived.
  4. These are a significant check on the arbitrary use of power by the government.
  5. Rights protect minorities from the oppression of majority.
