NCERT 6th Class (CBSE) Social Science: The First Empire: The Mauryas

Question: Write short notes on Administration of Pataliputra. Souros of revenue.

Answer: Pataliputra:

  1. A committee of 30 members looked after the administration of the city.
  2. This committee was divided into six boards each comprising of five members.
  3. Each board looked after a specific department such as:
    (i) Comfort and security of foreigners.
    (ii) Registration of birth and deaths.
    (iii) Industry
    (iv) Trade and commerce.
    (v) Inspection of manufactured goods.
    (vi) Collection of taxes.

Revenue:

  1. Land revenue was the main source of income.
  2. It was fixed between one-fourth and one-sixth of the produce depending upon the fertility of the soil.
  3. Revenue was also obtained from trade.
  4. Other sources income were forests, mines, custom, duties, fines and gifts. Arthashastra also mention water tax.

Question: It is said that Ashoka was the first who spoke directly to his people. How did he do this?

Answer:

  1. He issued edicts which he pasted on the public places.
  2. He followed Dhamma.
  3. He wrote messages in Prakrit language which was spoken by the people.
  4. He went on tours and spoke directly to his people.

Question: Why do you think the Mauryan kings employed spies?

Answer:

  1. To know the public opinion
  2. If anyone is planning conspiracy or attack the king can get know.
