Question: Name the different properties that materials have? Answer: Materials have different properties like roughness, luster, transparency solubility, flotation, attraction towards a magnet, conduction of heat and conduction of electricity. Question: What are miscible and immiscible liquids? Give three examples each. Answer: Liquids that dissolve in water are said to be miscible in water. For example: Alcohol, vinegar lemon juice, honey and glycerin. Liquids that do not dissolve in water are said to be immicible in water. For Eg - Kerosene, coconut oil and diesel. Question: Name two gases that are soluble in water. Answer: They are: Carbondioxide Oxygen Question: What are magnetic material? Give two examples. Answer: Material that are attracted to magnet are called magnetic materials. For Eg- Iron, Nickel etc. Question: How are different materials grouped depending on transparency? Answer: They are: Transparent: Materials that allow all the light to pass through them For Eg - Glass sheet, water etc. Translucent: Materials that allow some light to pass through them For Eg - Colored glass, oiled paper etc. Opaque: Materials that allow no light to pass through them. For Eg - Wood, stone etc. Question: Give three characteristics each of solid, liquid and gas. Answer: Solid: Definite shape and volume. Cannot be compressed. Particles are closely packed. Liquid: Definite volume but no definite shape. Can be compressed to small extent. Particles are not so closely packed. Gas: No definite shape and land volume. Highly compressed. Particles are loosely packed. Question: List all the items known to you that float on water. Check and see if they will float on an oil or kerosene. Give one reason. Answer: We often group materials for our convenience. It helps to describe their properties. Question: Suggest two bases on which we can group objects. Answer: We use tumblers made of glass, plastic and metal to keep a liquid. These substances can hold a liquid. A tumbler made of cloth cannot hold a liquid because: Cloth piece is not hard enough to hold liquids and Cloth piece has very minute pores through which the liquid oozes out. Question: What are the similarities between iron, copper and aluminium? Answer: They all have lustre, They are all metals, They are hard. Question: Mention some materials which are made up of paper. Answer: Books, notebooks, newspapers, toys, calendars, etc. Question: Why is water important for our body? Answer: Water can dissolve a large number of substances, so it is needed by the body. It is also major part of our body cells. Question: What is the basis for sorting materials? Answer: Materials are grouped on the basis of similarities or dissimilarities in their properties. Question: What is the reason for grouping materials? Answer: Materials are grouped for our convenience to study their properties and also observe any patterns in these properties. Question: Metals have lustre (shine). Give reason why some metal articles become dull and loose their shine. Answer: Metals when exposed to air react with moisture and gases present in it, thereby forming a dull layer of some other compound on it. Question: Kerosene, coconut oil, mustard oil do not dissolve in water, even on shaking. They separate after sometime forming two different layer. Explain why. Answer: The molecules of water do not intermingle (mix) with the molecules of oil. The space between the molecules of water is not taken by oil, so they are immiscible in water. Question: Name a non-metal that has lustre. Answer: Iodine. Question: Metals generally occur in solid state and are hard. Name a metal that exists in liquid state and a metal that is soft and can be cut with knife. Answer: Mercury is a metal that exists in liquid state. Sodium and Potassium are soft metals and can be cut with knife. Question: Name the naturally occuring hardest substance known. Answer: Diamond, it is made up of carbon (non-metal). Question: Why is water called a universal solvent? Answer: Water dissolves a large number of substances in it. So it is called universal solvent. Question: 'Grouping of objects helps the shopkeeper.' Justify the statement. Answer: Proper grouping of objects helps shopkeeper in the following ways: He can locate the required object easily and quickly. He can easily come to know what stocks are going to finish and he should purchase them for his customers. Question: Describe an experiment to prove that water is transparent. Answer: Take a beaker half-filled with clean water. Put a coin in beaker of water. Place the beaker undisturbed for a few minutes where enough light is present. Now, observe the coin immersed in water from the top of the beaker. Are you able to see the coin? You can clearly see the coin immersed in water. This proves that water is a transparent liquid. Question: Write an experiment to show that our palm is translucent. Answer: Cover the glass of a torch with your palm at a dark place. Switch on the torch and observe from the other side of palm. We see that the light of torch passes through palm but not clearly. This experiment shows that our palm becomes translucent when a strong beam of light passes through it. Question: How can you show that some solids like sugar, salt are soluble in water whereas solids like chalk powder and sand are not soluble in water? Answer: Collect samples of sugar, salt, chalk powder and sand. Take four beakers. Fill each one of them about two-third with water. Add a teaspoonful of sugar to the first beaker, salt to the second, chalk powder to the third and sand to the fourth. Stir the contents of each beaker with a spoon / stirrer. Wait for a few minutes and observe what happens to the substances added to the water. Note down your observations in the following table. Inference: Sugar and salt are soluble in water. Chalk powder and sand are insoluble in water.
