NCERT 6th Class (CBSE) Science: Separation of Substances

Question: Sea water has salt dissolved in it. You know that pure water can be obtained from sea water by distillation. However, this method is not used to get drinking water from sea water. What do you think is the reason?

Answer: The reason is that because due to the process of distillation all minerals and other substances in water had been removed. This water is not used for drinking thought it pure, it is used in laboratories, car batteries, syringes etc.

Question: A battle contains either salt or chalk. How will fined out what it has, without tasting it?

Answer: We can get know as salt is dissolved in the water but chalk is never dissolved because it is insoluble. So if we see it is dissolved it is salt and if it dose not dissolve it is chalk.
